Why my beard is curly?
The texture of our beard bristles is directly related to the shape of our hair follicles. Although we can believe that all hairs are perfectly round, this is inaccurate. They can actually have many forms. For example, men of European descent usually have oval-shaped hair follicles while men of African descent usually have hair follicles that are also oval-shaped but are narrower. As a general rule, symmetrical hair follicles promote straight and slick hairs, while asymmetrical hair follicles give way to more curly and coiled hairs. Nevertheless, symmetrical hair follicles can still give way to curly hairs, if there is a deficiency of fibrous proteins or if the beard is dry and/or uneven. The following image illustrates the different forms of hair follicles according to the different variations of hair structures.
What tools and products do I need to maintain my curly beard?
Although curly beards appear shorter than straight and slick beards, their bristles often have a similar length or are even longer. The beard growth rate is about half an inch per month and this, whatever the structure of its hair. That being said, developing a beautiful curly beard with a bit of length definitely takes more time and requires frequent and assiduous cares since his bristles curl up on themselves. Without changing the nature of our beard hair and the shape of our hair follicles, we can still make our curly beard healthier, easier to manage, smoother and silkier. To do so, we first need a good beard oil or nourishing oil and a beard butter. Curly beard's bristles and the skin underneath require daily hydration. Then, for an aesthetic aspect, we need a boar bristle beard brush and a wooden beard comb with large and spaced teeth. These two tools are essential to untangle and smooth the beard hair as well as help them grow in the desired direction. They are also convenient for a deeper and evenly distribution of beard oils and balms/butter. Finally, a curly beard is very easy to dry out as well as the skin underneath. It is, therefore, capital to wash it at a good frequency with a cleanser specially designed for the beard hair. It is important to carefully inspect the ingredient list of beard care products we want to use. We want 100% natural products. The use of chemicals ingredients or tools that change the structure of our beard's bristles like a flat iron is not recommended.
What should my beard care routine look like?
A curly beard requires more patience and maintenance than a straight and slick beard. Since his hairs naturally come down close to the skin, a curly beard requires special care. If our beard's hairs are curling, waving, and/or coiling, it is very important to invest in good beard grooming products right from the start. In addition, it is even more important to develop a complete beard care routine. Once well equipped to maintain his curly beard, everything resides in the daily routine. One must be very diligent and take the time to cherish his beard every day. Aside from having an esthetic effect, this ensures a healthy beard and a skin-underlying as well as preventing split ends and ingrown hairs. If we decide to let our beard grows and the latter is curled, our daily beard care routine should look like this. An application of moisturizing beard butter followed by an application of beard oil or nourishing oil with hands one to twice a day (in the morning and in the evening). After the application of the butter and oil on our beard, we should always gently comb our beard with a wooden beard comb. Finally, after having combed it, we have to brush it with a boar bristles beard brush. As for the cleansing of his beard, it must be done with a beard shampoo every two to three days. We must keep in mind that too much of a good thing can rapidly become a bad thing. Washing our beard too often may dry it up and cause problems such as beard's dandruff and itching. When we use beard care products, we must remain vigilant about how they act in our beard and adjust our routine if necessary.
We must keep a short style and trim our beard regularly
As mentioned above, when our beard is curly, it is better to opt for a short style. By doing so, it is easier to keep some control over his most rebels hairs. Of course, we want at all costs to avoid split ends and ingrown hairs. To appreciate our beard, we must obviously do all we can to keep it in perfect health. A curly beard should always be trimmed once or twice a month. It is always strongly suggested to visit its barber to get a perfectly defined trim. A good barber knows how to spot where beard's bristles need to be trimmed.
