N°.20: Referee Mike Beltran
Let's just start by saying that; obviously Beltran aka ''EL JEFE''—should have taken the first place in our list. Unfortunately, he doesn't fight in the UFC. Nevertheless, we reserved a special spot for him here. He may not be a fighter in the UFC, but don't be fooled—Aside from his very imposing beard, Mike is not to be messed with. He began his formal Mixed Martial Arts training in 2002 and is a BJJ brown belt. He then became a licensed Professional Mixed Martial Arts Referee and Judge in 2007. He now officiates for organizations like the UFC and Bellator. Mike has one son who's a wrestler at St. John Bosco HS in Bellflower, keep an eye out for him! The 42 years old father is also the referee on the show Kingdom. Which is very good if you haven't checked it out yet—go take a look! At this point, you must wonder how long it took Mike to grow such an impressive beard... Well, he is now at 7 years of growth and still counting! By the way, Mike who's kinda a good friend—will celebrate his 43rd birthday on August 31st. Why don't you go ahead and give some love to our bearded brother on his Facebook page!
N°.19: Brock Lesnar
Appearing only one time in the UFC, during his unsuccessful UFC heavyweight title defense against Velasquez at UFC 121, Brock's winter hunting beard is now a thing of legend. You'd expect from such a bearded beast pure dominance in a fist fight—but, unfortunately for Lesnar, he was never a real MMA fighter and his beard only proved to act as a blood soaking sponge. Brock promptly shaved his beard in shame and allegedly mounted it on his wall, next to his collection of deer and elk heads.
N°.18: Travis Browne
''Hapa'', who is a UFC heavyweight and boyfriend of the former women bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, has a record of 18-4 in MMA. Browne first decided to stop shaving before his fight against Alistair Overeem in 2013. So far, it looks like Browne is gonna keep his beard—but given the fact that the beard is a fairly new endeavor for ''Hapa'', he failed to fully qualify as one of MMA's greatest beard.
N°.17: Jon Jones
Short lived beard life, Jon Jones may be considered by many as the King of the UFC light heavyweights, but he is no beard aficionado. Jon first grew is war beard during the whole UFC 151 thing with Sonnen—fight that he took beardless in the end. Another bad move Jones...
N°.16: Pat Healy
Healy has been one of the few victims of the UFC beard bigotry—poor Healy... The grappler has been bearded forever and seemed to have channeled his power into it. Managing six straight wins, placing him in rank for a potential title-shot. However, he was forced to trim his beard prior to his fight against Nurmagomedov. He lost that fight, coincidence? Doubtful...
N°.15: Keith Jardine
Keith ''The Dean of Mean'' may have his best days behind him—but we sure can allow him some points for beard consistency. His little blonde goatee always made a point in his bouts. Jardine, loved by bikers, was known for chasing the knockout—or get beat up.
N°.14: Dustin Hazelett
The somewhat submission specialist during his stint in the UFC—''McLovin'' who won four of his fights via submission, then lost three in a row to Daley, Story, and Bocek before sadly retiring at the age of 26. However, Mclovin legacy lives on in the form of an epic Spartan-esque beard—which we hope he maintained to this day.
N°.13: Andrei Arlovski
Now we're starting to get serious—one of the most fearsome looking fighters in the sport's history—thanks mostly to his knockout power and his grizzly beard. Unfortunately for the ''Pitbull'', his beard could only provide protection for so long, before getting his chin turned into glass by the legend Fedor Emelianenko. Thus leading to more KO losses. But, since then, Arlovski managed to go on to win four fights—proving that there is still life in the old beard.
N°.12: Alessio Sakara
The UFC veteran Sakara, Leonidas reborn, has been around the game since his debut at UFC 55 in 2005 and last fought in 2013. This Roman centurion with a mixed record of 19-11, has already been disqualified for punches to the back of the head against Patrick Coté—proving that this man doesn't play by the rules, much like his spartan beard.
N°.11: Cody McKenzie
Surprising many in the reality show TUF with his Van Dyke beard, the TUF alumni McKenzie earned a place on the Ultimate Fighter Finale card in December 2010. Beating Aaron Wilkinson with his 11th consecutive triangle choke submission victory, he has since gone 2-4 in the UFC and retired. Perhaps proving that messing around with his epic ''Monsieur Beard'' nickname may have had detrimental effects on his cage results.
N°.10: Dave Herman
Dave ''PeeWee'' Herman only gave us a few viewings of his beard—otherwise, he would likely have been a challenger for the top of the beard division. PeeWee who is an anti-BJJ advocate—had to eat his words after being submitted by BJJ specialist Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The fact being that he shaved his beard for that fight. Maybe he'll learn the lesson and retain the beard that helped him thwart off so many submissions in the past.
N°.9: Court McGee
If looking like an Amish was a thing, well then UFC welterweight Court McGee would be the king of cool—which it isn't, but his unique beard still has its right to be in our beard compilation. McGee who won TUF season 11, may not be Hamish, but he sure as hell has the beard to argue that he is. His beard isn't bushy per se, but it is still a work of manscaping art.
N°.8: Tank Abbott
This self-admitting brawler represented the barbarian, beard included. Abbott, this old school fighter looked like some guy who was just picked up from off the street and put in the octagon to fight—which he literally was. Tank was one of the very few men to ever loss to Kimbo Slice. The goatee beard of Abbott recalls a younger brother of the founding member of ZZ Top.
N°.7: Johny Hendricks
''Big Rigs'' is a prime example that behind every great beard lies a great fighter. Who hasn't grown to love Hendricks' trademark beard? Johny who walks around at 195 pounds between bouts. It is probably safe to assume that at least 15 pounds of it relate to the hair on his chin—getting older, weight cuts being more and more difficult—this might explain why after years with his beard he recently shaved it off. And lost...
N°.6: Evan Tanner
The former UFC champion was known as a real man—touting one of the most lush beards ever seen in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. The late Evan Tanner may no longer be with us—but his beard memories will live on forever. Tanner was a true man, he'd hike out alone in the desert and live like a caveman. After Evan passed away, many paid their respects by growing a beard of their own.
N°.5: Kimbo Slice
From his real name, Kevin Ferguson, who passed away this year—former YouTube backyard brawler star and six-time MMA fighter, has also played in the boxing ring and in movies. Cast member of the TUF season 10, Kimbo lost his only fight on the show, against Roy Nelson. The one thing that we can learn from Kimbo's MMA career is probably that a glorious black beard isn't always enough...
N°.4: Ian McCall
''Uncle Creepy'' who first signed in the UFC in 2011 to compete in a four-man Flyweight Tournament to determine the first UFC Flyweight Champion, lost to Demetrious Johnson in the opening round. Since then 13-5, McCall is currently ranked #5, even tho he hasn't fought since 2015. But the handlebar fanatic is set to fight again in September 2016 at UFC 203. The 5'5'' fighter is a proud bearded since the beginning of his career, even tho he is swapping style quite often, you can always expect him to rock his handlebar at the weigh-in.
N°.3: Michael Chiesa
The Holy Caveman Chiesa, who is currently 14-2 in the UFC—has taken out all challengers in the TUF 15 Live lightweight tourney and has been crowned the winner of the season back in June 2012. The one time that Michael Chiesa shaved his beard and went out publicly, he looked like a completely different man. His first lost in the octagon came indeed, just after he shaved his all mighty beard. Moreover, he lost to Kuivanen, who happened to rock a pretty dapper beard. Nevertheless, Chiesa is a proud beard veteran and has worn a beard forever—therefore he earned the 3rd spot in our compilation.
N°.2: Conor Mcgregor
Well, does ''The Notorious'' really needs an introduction nowadays? Anyways, McGregor is an Irish MMA fighter who is currently the UFC Featherweight Champion—and also compete at lightweight and welterweight. Whether you like him or not, you heard of him. He is the main event of this week Pay per View, where he takes is revenge against Nate Diaz at UFC 202. The Irish superstar is a loud mouth and, most of the time, he back it up. Although he shaves his beard from time to time, ''The Notorious'' almost always wear a verdi, a boxed beard or full beard with pride. With a cumulated 6 KO/TKO in 8 UFC bouts so far, you can't deny the power of his beard. While you may argue that Conor's beard isn't worthy of the 2nd place—you'll just have to deal with it...
N°.1: Roy Nelson
''Big Country'' could seriously give Santa Clause a run for his money. Nelson's beard is to be feared and revered—it is so thick that a tribe of indigenous people could live in there and no one would ever know. Roy has been notorious for terrible hair for many years now—rocking in all manners horrible mullets. His beard as caused much controversy in the sport and, even tho proved has less desirable than some of the neater beards on this list—he's number one for us because he's utilized it the best and has worn it strongly, with pride—no matter what. Dana White and Daniel Cormier even went after Nelson's beard at UFC 166 and asked the commission that Roy should trim his beard before the fight.—further more, White as gone as far as saying ''Trim it down and make it look normal. You know? It's disgusting." Come on Dana...
